"Donald Trump was running a multi-billion-dollar corporate entity," one lawyer, Susan Necheles, told jurors of the Trump Organization's far-too-busy-for-fraud owner. But Weisselberg, she told jurors, hid his self-serving crimes from the Trumps, a family he'd worked for for more than 30 years. "You saw him on the witness stand almost crying" over betraying the Trump family, Necheles told jurors of the former finance chief, repeating for emphasis, "He was ashamed." "I ask you to remember that language," Necheles told the jury, reading it aloud. "The prosecution has been trying to convince you that Mr. Weisselberg's actions were done 'in behalf of' the company," Necheles said.

Opening arguments are set to begin Monday in the high-profile criminal case against the Trump Organization, the former president's family-run company that helped make him a household name. The star witness for prosecutors will be Allen Weisselberg, the company’s longtime chief financial officer who is currently on paid leave from the Trump Organization. He was indicted alongside the Trump Organization last year after a yearslong investigation into the company’s financial practices by the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The Trump Organization faces up to about $1.6 million in penalties if convicted on all counts. They're seeking unspecified money damages, and the trial will feature videotaped testimony that Trump gave in the case last year.

Cohen, who worked for Trump and was his fixer and confidante for a decade, spoke to MSNBC's Chris Hayes on Wednesday, weighing in on the ongoing probe in New York into the Trump Organization. Cohen told MSNBC that the investigation sparked by New York Attorney General's $250 million civil lawsuit against the Trump family would "ultimately terminate the Trump Organization — Donald, Don Jr., Ivanka, Eric, Weisselberg, McConney, and the rest of them." Trump's three eldest children — Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump — are listed in James' lawsuit. New York Attorney General Letitia James' office sued Trump, his children, and his business. "Trump falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars to further enrich himself and cheat the system," James' office said. James on Wednesday accused the Trump Organization of issuing financial statements that were in "clear violation" of accepted accounting principles. Many of the lawsuit's fraud allegations center on 10 years of Trump's statements of financial condition. Mazars walked away from the statements after James' office found that they repeatedly "misstated objective facts."
